Paulina Rubio Dosamantes, born under the
zodiac sign of Gemini, was born on June 17th 1971 in the city
of Mexico, product of the love of her parents Susana Dosamantes
and Enrique Rubio. She is the oldest of two siblings.
Paulina's
artistic career began while she was merely a girl. She recorded
her first song when she was three, and as soon as she was 5, she
enrolled at the Centro de Capacitación Infantil de Televisa
(now CEA), the television empire of the Azcarrage family. Here,
she took singing, dancing, acting, painting, and jazz classes
every afternoon.
After
two years of being there, Pedro Damián and Martha Zavaleta
called her parents to ask for their approval for Paulina to join
a band which would be formed by children from the center.
A
while later,
after months of rehearsing, on the 30th of April 1982 and under
the guidance of the Spaniard Miguel Bosé, the Timbiriche
band appeared for the very first time. The following are its original
members:
Alix
Bauer, Benny Ibarra, Diego Shoening, Mariana Garza, Paulina Rubio,
and Sasha Sökol. A new element
would join only a year later. It was Erick Rubin who joined the
banned, but did not substitute anyone. Timbiriche was simply growing.
To
describe Timbiriche in extense is no easy task. It would be to
refer to about an entire decade of success. Success of which I
myself am entirely ignorant of.
I
think it's enough if I told you that Paulina recorded--as a member
of Timbiriche--10 full albums, participated in countless tours
and concerts across the Mexican Republic and hundreds in the exterior,
and contributed to the sales of more than 6 million copies of
albums! Timbiriche was, without a doubt, the most internationally
famous and important band in Mexico. Paulina was of the few members
of Timbiriche that stayed until its disappearance. To be exact,
she was the second to last. Diego was the one who was always present
in the band to the very end.
While
she was in Timbiriche, Paulina Rubio appeared for the very first
time on the small screen in the year of 1988, with the role of
the villain in the Mexican soap opera "Pasión y Poder"
(which means Passion and Power in English). In this role, she
gave life to the character of Paulina Montenegro.
However,
it wasn't the very first time that she participated in a story-line.
Paulina had previously (in 1985 to be exact) participated in the
musical "Vaselina" (based on the movie "Grease")
along with all of the members of Timbiriche.
It
was in 1992 that Paulina Rubio abandoned Timbiriche, leaving behind
the group to which she had dedicated a whole decade of her life.
Paulina
had been successful with the band, but now, her goal was to be
successful as a soloist. Having been part of a very important
band in the music industry and with projects to debut as a soloist,
anyone would have suffered from some serious headaches. Paulina,
being the way she was, simply took her baggage and travelled to
Spain to begin her work on her first album as a soloist. Little
did she know that this album's title would become her title as
well in the Latin Music world. LA CHICA DORADA (which means
the Golden Girl in English) was born.
The
single "Mío" (which means Mine in English) was
the first single, and a classic in her career. With her solo debut
album, she won her first Golden album, and later in 1993, it would
become a platinum album.
Her
second album, 24 KILATES (which means 24 Karats in English),
became a platinum-selling album after the more than 150,000 copies
sold in just three weeks after its release.
In
1994, Paulina Rubio took the role of the protagonist in the film
BÉSAME EN LA BOCA (which means Kiss My Lips in English).
This movie was cataloged as a "churro", even worse than
the soap operas of Televisa. It wasn't so much for Paulina's acting,
but rather its far from original story line that didn't give it
neither pain nor glory.
Her
following albums were EL TIEMPO ES ORO (which means Time
is Gold in English) and PLANETA PAULINA (which means Planet
of Paulina in English), released in 1995 and 1996 in chronological
order.
After
PLANETA PAULINA, Paulina took the
greatest rest in her career. She moved to Spain, where she did
a little bit of everything. Among the most important things she
did was host a summer TV show called "Vive el Verano"
(which means Long Live the Summer in English). This show gave
her a lot of exposure and terrain in fame--especially when she
interpreted the program's theme song which was also titled "Vive
el Verano".
To
having provoked a lot of scandals (the greatest of them having
a first and last name) she simply says: "I don't feel intimidated
by the press."
¿What
about Love?
Leaving
behind her romances with Diego Shoening and Erick Rubín,
who doesn't know about her relationship with Ricardo Boffil?
He
is the man that has made her happy. Their relationship is more
than strong, despite destiny's surprises. They both seem very
happy together. This Spaniard is the biggest scandal in her life.
In
2000, she releases her 5th album, PAULINA, and steps more
solid than ever. This album has quickly become the most successful
in her career. 6 singles have been released from this album. The
singles include: "Lo Haré Por Ti" (which means
I'll Do It For You in English), "El Último Adios"
(which means The Last Goodbye in English), "Tal Vez, Quíza"
(which means Maybe, Perhaps in English), "Y Yo Sigo Aquí"
(which means And I'm Still Right Here in English), "Sexi
Dance" (self-explanatory), and "Yo No Soy Esa Mujer"
(which means I'm Not That Kind of Woman in English). It's also
possible to say that with this album, she became the top-selling
Latin recording artist for that year. PAULINA has become
a Golden and Platinum selling album all over Latin America selling
more than 2.5 million copies and beating all of her competition
when it comes to sales such as the Mexican singer Thalía.
After
the great success of PAULINA, Paulina decides to record
in English, and declared that her next discographic production
would be in that language. After the long wait for her new production,
her fist single, titled "Don't Say Goodbye" is finally
released on the radio and has been on the air all over the US--and
all over the world, for that matter. It has received airplay in
places where Paulina had never been heard of before like Russia,
Poland, Hungary, and Japan, to name a few. The Spanish version
of "Don't Say Goodbye" was also released in all the
Latin radio stations and was titled "Si Tu Te Vas" (which
means If You Leave in English). It has managed to stay in the
top countdowns all over Latin America. The video of "Don't
Say Goodbye" has been able to appear in the Top 10 of MTV's
TRL with Carlson Daly.
Finally,
on June 18th 2002, BORDER GIRL, the Golden Girl's English
debut album is released. After a week of its release, she debuts
in the Billboard Charts for Top-Selling Albums in the US at the
11th position. On the 21st of June 2002, she appeared at radio
station 104 KRBE in Houston, Texas, for autographs and to promote
her new album. In honor of Paulina, 104 KRBE has declared the
21st of June as "Paulina Day" in Houston. Paulina Rubio
has begun to appear, like an International Super Star, in programs
like "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno", and performing
in events like the "Wango Tango".
BORDER
GIRL has gone Golden and Platinum in more than 8 countries
in the world. It's the album that has made her dream come true.
She is finally known beyond Spanish-speakers and is performing
all over the world. She has appeared in magazines where she had
never appeared before such as "Rolling Stones", Maxim's
"Blender", and "Stuff" to name a few. It can
also be said that Japan has fallen in love with Paulina. BORDER
GIRL has been able to be the 2nd Top-Selling Album in Japan.
